Perhaps the most crucial aspect of information literacy is the location of information, and an understanding of where the information comes from. By understanding how search engines operate, we can help students write effective search queries, and alter aspects to change the results. We can also help them see that just because google produces a site for a particular query doens't mean that the site will answer their questions. Scanning search results and verifying sources are crucial skills for engaging with information, and knowing what search engines look at and how they rank allow this to be done more systematically.
